Mexico’s Main Heritage Sites (UNESCO)

There are several organizations that choose the heritage of each country. The most important of them is UNESCO, linked to the UN and which chooses the sites considered heritage of humanity. In order for a building or site to receive the title, it must have significant historical and cultural relevance to a people, country, region or even the whole world.

These are the main historical patrimonies cataloged by Unesco in Mexico:

  • Queretaro;
  • Morelia;
  • Mount Alban;
  • Zacatecas;
  • Mexico City;
  • Tlacotalpan;
  • Guanajuato;
  • Chichen Itza.

As we mentioned earlier, Mexico has a very strong indigenous heritage. In this way, it is possible to observe traces of this culture in all places. In some cities, this influence is even greater, such as Queretaro. The region has several constructions and aspects that mix aspects of both traditional peoples and invaders.

Morelia

This city has more than 200 historic buildings. The main characteristic of the buildings are the earthy tones and the peculiarity of the city being built in a region of hills, something common for colonial cities — as they became more easily defended.

Mount Alban

This is one of the main pre-Hispanic cities in the country. Historians estimate that it may have reached a population of over 35,000 in its heyday. Thus, this site has several buildings from the Aztec empire period.

Zacatecas

This city is located in central Mexico. Precisely for this reason, it was chosen by the Spaniards as the construction site of one of the first cities in the country, and one of the most important of the entire colonial period. The city has buildings in hilly regions, which makes these very different for cities.

Mexico City

Mexico City is one of the largest urban centers in the Americas. This alone makes the city suitable to be visited. In addition, the city has a rich historical and cultural wealth, as it was built on the ruins of Tenochtitlan, capital of the Aztec empire.

Tlacotalpan

Tlacotalpan offers visitors to this simple city a step back in time. Thus, its constructions are not of great magnitude, but stand out for their originality and uniqueness. So, the small buildings in bright colors and columns on the facades are the main attraction.

Guanajuato

The large amount of mines of precious metals, such as silver, was what sparked ambition in the hearts of the European invaders over the peoples of America. Guanajuato helps to tell a little bit about this story, as this was the city that most produced Silver during the 18th century.

Perhaps this is Mexico’s best-known heritage. Located in the Yucatan region, in the south of the country. It is a temple of the Mayan peoples, which no longer existed after the arrival of the Spanish invaders. Among the buildings, the most famous is the Temple of Kukulcan or Pyramid of Kukulcan, 24 meters high.

Therefore, this country is one that you should put on your list of priorities to visit. In addition to Mexico’s heritage sites, the country offers tourists a number of natural beauties, especially beaches close to the Caribbean, such as Cancun.
